For example, user IDs, passwords or security questions could be requested during the attack. A vishing attack can be conducted via voicemail, smartphone, VoIP (voice over IP) or landline.
The potential victim receives a message, often generated by voice synthesis or simulated in real time, indicating that suspicious activity has taken place on their account or on a financial service in their name. You are instructed to call a specific telephone number and provide information to verify your identity or to ensure that fraud does not occur. You may also be asked for this information in the initial call. If the attack is carried out over the phone, the caller ID may recognize the fraudulent number as a legitimate number of the financial institution through spoofing.
You can protect yourself by trying to identify any unsolicited or surprising messages or calls that may appear to be illegal or suspicious.
